Do you have depression?

Depression, also called major depressive disorder, or clinical depression can affect your day-to-day activities. More importantly, it can affect your overall feelings of well-being. It is a mood disorder that leads to a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest. Depression is much more than just “feeling the blues,” and it typically isn’t something you can just snap out of. Depression is one of the most common mental health disorders in the United States. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), it is the leading cause of disability worldwide. Depression can present in MANY different forms, both mentally and physically.

Current recommended treatment algorithms for depression include first-line medications such as a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) or selective norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI). Patients not experiencing symptom relief from first-line medications will likely be introduced to another class of drugs. These are the antipsychotics. Symptom relief, if any, with either of these medication classes can take up to 4-8 weeks and may come with multiple side effects. Those side effects may include worsening of original symptoms and potentially even suicidal thoughts.

Feelings may include, but certainly are not limited to:

  • Sadness

  • Hopelessness

  • Emptiness

  • Irritability

  • Loss of interest

  • Sleep disturbances

  • Guilt

  • Trouble thinking

  • Even several unexplained physical symptoms like headaches and back pain.

These feelings can lead to difficulty in performing simple, normal daily tasks. Prolonged feelings of depression may lead to thoughts of hurting oneself and even suicide.
