Treatment of Suicidal Ideation

Ketamine Infusion Therapy has been proven to be one of the most, if not THE most effective treatments for patients with suicidal ideation. Multiple studies have shown that just one infusion of ketamine can be effective for emergency treatment of suicidal ideation. In fact, many Emergency Rooms in the United States have recognized that ketamine is a proper and effective treatment for suicidal ideation. Ketamine treatment for suicidal ideation is most successful with an initial stabilizing infusion, followed by a series of infusions.

Suicide is sometimes considered when someone is faced with what seems to be an overwhelming life situation, or they may feel that there is no hope for the future. There is a false belief that suicide is the only way out of the situation. Suicidal Ideation, also referred to as suicidal thoughts, is a broad term used to describe thinking about, considering, or even planning suicide. One of the most tragic realities about suicide is that it can be prevented.

It is important to understand the risk factors as well as warning signs of suicide. Some risk factors include a stressful life event, feeling hopeless, helpless, or lonely, substance abuse, chronic disease, underlying mental health disorder, family history of mental health disorder, or previous suicide attempt.

Warning signs could include:

  • Talking about suicide

  • Researching ways to die

  • Increased use of alcohol or drugs

  • Self-destructive behaviors or actions

  • Extreme mood swings

  • Changes in sleep or eating patterns

  • Isolation

  • Preoccupation with violence or death

  • Buying a firearm

  • Saying goodbyes to people as if they will never see them again.

This list is certainly NOT conclusive, but does provide some examples of what to look for.
